EMPLOYEES THAT MUST PROVE IMMUNITY:

State and federal laws frequently require healthcare agencies, schools, or public health organization to keep records of your employees’ proof of immunity against certain communicable diseases. In particular, local Department of Health agencies and accreditation organizations will mandate this requirement.

The dangers of not having a properly vaccinated workforce include fines for noncompliance, loss of accreditation, and most severely, the spread of highly contagious illnesses. Compliance requirements help to protect vulnerable populations such as the elderly, sick, and those with auto-immune deficiencies.

Organizations who generally follow these requirements include:

  • Home health agencies (LHCSA, CHHA, MLTC)
  • Nursing homes and assisted living facilities
  • Hospitals
  • After school programs
  • Schools, colleges, and universities
  • Workforce development organizations

METHODS TO PROVE IMMUNITY:

Before hiring a new employee, employers should know the immunities required for their job function. Common viruses that require immunity include: measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and influenza. Organizations should check with their compliance departments to better understand the immunization requirements based on your organization’s location and industry standards.

An employee’s proof of immunity documents state their immunization history. This includes any past vaccinations or blood titers. For any missing documentation, a titer should be performed to determine the count of antibodies present in the blood draw. The number of antibodies counted will determine the person’s immunity to a specific antigen (virus). If the antibody count falls below a certain number, they lack immunity, which places them at risk of contracting and spreading the disease.

If the titers show a lack of immunity, the employee then requires a vaccine to prove immunity and stay compliant with regulations. Some vaccines come packaged in specific combinations that could be administered together.

These include:

  • MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)
  • MMRV (measles, mumps, rubella, varicella)
  • TDaP (tetanus , diphtheria, pertussis)
  • Td (tetanus, diphtheria)

Both up-to-date vaccinations and titers serve as acceptable proofs of immunity for most regulatory organizations.
