WHAT EMPLOYERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT A DOT PHYSICAL

Any commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driver must first pass a DOT physical, . The FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) operates within the DOT and sets the requirements for the DOT physical, which includes a hearing test, vision exam and more. The physical must be conducted by an FMCSA-Certified Medical Examiner.

      A DOT PHYSICAL INCLUDES:

      • Health History Review
      • Vision Test
      • Hearing Test
      • Blood Pressure and Heart Rate Check
      • Urinalysis
      • Physical Exam

We also know that  state-level DOT regulations and select employers may also require a 5-panel drug test, which we can add to any DOT physical.

Each physical takes about 45 minutes. Once your driver’s DOT physical is complete, they will either be immediately cleared and receive their Medical Examiner’s Certificate, aka a DOT medical card, or they will be referred to their physician for necessary follow-up. If a DOT drug test is added to an exam, a driver will not get their DOT medical card until their drug test results come back as a pass.

Once a driver passes their DOT physical, their clearance is good for 24 months as long as they don’t have any physical or mental health conditions that warrant more frequent monitoring and/or testing. This means every two years, your drivers are subject to a new DOT physical in order to renew their license and be qualified to drive commercially.

DOT Physicals & Drug Testing Faqs

A DOT physical includes a hearing test, vision screening, blood pressure and heart rate check, urinalysis, review of your complete medical history, and a physical exam. Per state-specific DOT regulations or employer preferences, it may also include a drug test.

A DOT physical is a physical exam required by the Department of Transportation (DOT) for individuals who operate commercial vehicles.

DOT physicals are required every two years for most commercial drivers.

There are a couple of things employees should bring to their DOT physical, specifically:

      • A list of all current medications, the dosage, and how frequently they take each one.
      • Any eyewear or hearing aids worn for vision or hearing problems.
      • Diabetics need to bring their most recent Hemoglobin A1C labs (HaAIC) and their blood sugar logs.
      • Drivers with heart issues must bring a letter from their cardiologist that outlines their medical history, current medicates, and clearly states that they’re safe to work.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires commercial drivers to pass a physical exam to ensure they are fit to operate a commercial vehicle safely.
