The Trending Surge in OSHA Audits and a Strategy for Rapid Compliance

Many of our clients across a spectrum of industries are reporting a spike in audits from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Not only is there evidence to support this increased scrutiny, but our findings also suggest it’s likely to continue into 2024. To ensure you’re prepared, we’re bringing you this information as well as offering a strategy for compliance.

The Changing Landscape of OSHA Audits

Over the last year, the business world has witnessed a notable increase in OSHA audits across various sectors. From an animal boarding facility facing fines for not conducting employee audiograms to a beer manufacturer being penalized for neglecting fit testing, the breadth of issues being scrutinized is notable.

This surge directly correlates to OSHA’s budget increase, which is up 3.3% over last year. Furthermore, OSHA’s staffing is the highest it’s been in decades. The number of OSHA inspectors increased by 19% in 2022, and they’ve continued to add inspectors this year. More money and more people mean they have more resources to conduct more on-site inspections more frequently and can target a wider range of industries.

As our two examples mentioned earlier demonstrate, OSHA also seems to be addressing non-COVID-related items more and more, refocusing its efforts on pre-existing regulations that might have taken a backseat during the pandemic’s peak. Given that OSHA is looking to increase its budget by $106.4 million (17%) and add another 432 positions in 2024, this level of scrutiny is only likely to increase.
